There are a good number of smaller publishers who sell ebooks (and only ebooks). I don’t think anybody’s going to get rich from working with them, but they are genuine companies who pay advances and royalties and do all the other things that the major publishers do.

However, anybody whom you see advertising “make money by selling ebooks” is almost certainly a scammer. Legitimate publishers, no matter how small, don’t advertise themselves as publishers – they advertise the books they’ve published. Think about it – businesses advertise to the people whom they see as their customers. That should be a clue as to which way the money will flow if you respond to one of these adverts.

BTW, the canonical spelling is “intarwebz”. “Interweb” makes you look altogether too literate :-)

A friend of mine published an e-novel using smashwords and has made a couple of hundred dollars in about a year.

She is an extremely good writer and has done a lot of self-publicity (by which I don’t mean running round saying “please buy my book”, I mean doing detailed critiques on writing forums and showing herself to be someone who really can write).

So yes, she’s made money. But for the time spent she’d have been financially better off stacking shelves, absolutely no question.
